50 Cal Patch 8th RRFS

A couple pics from Bucks 372RRC Reunion in Sheridan, WY (1999)

Four buddies and I were on the "sig maintenance .50 Cal machine gun team" that "got to" hustle that heavy SOB from the trailers to the NE star bunker on the other side of HQ Co Orderly Room. What a treat!

BUCK

[I forgot to tell Buck in email that I had a bizarre experience with the 50Cal team.

I cant say when exactly it occured, but it was prettysoon after I landed in Phu Bai (June70). There was this guy "Cutberth" or something close to that who had been in-country for some time that I got along with, sort of a big-brother relationship. He was the "OldGuy" and I was the "NewGuy". That's how we addressed each other. So, anyway, one dark night it happen.

The bell in the hall began to ring, the siren began to wail, the horrble sound of, "WUMP WUMP WUMP WUMP WUMP WUMP", was heard in the distance.

Naturally, as it was my first Alert, I just about shit my pants. There was Cutberth, I looked up at him (I look up at just about everybody) and said, shivering in fear, "WHAT DO WE DO????" He looked down at me and said, " I DON'T KNOW!!!!!!!" Cutberth lost his status as "OldGuy" in that instant. It seems that prior to my arrival in Phu Bai the base hadnt been hit in quite some time. Lucky, lucky me!

I turned around and headed out the door. Not knowing if that was what I was supposed to do or not, and saw hundreds of guys running down the hall out the front of D-Row with Flack Jackets and Steel Pots on carrying M-14's. I walked out into the fray and was handed a box of 50Cal rounds and told to follow them. (It must have been the famous Sig-Maint 50Cal Team!) I hossed the friggin box to and fro, I think we went from there to where they kept the actual 50Cal...I dont know, it all such a blur. I guess I ended up sitting on that Star Bunker Buck is talking about. I really cant rememeber. I cant remember whether I stayed with that group, I think not, I think someone told me to go sit in a ditch somewhere. ]
