"Brad Pummel"..... BPUMMEL@prodigy.net
I was a 05H at Phu Bai, from the period of about Nov./Dec. 69 to Dec. 70. Got one of the last flights out on Christmas Eve 1970 from Saigon. I worked on the Catfish system, and also some other dang thing, trailers out of OPS forget the name. I have been looking for some old buddies I lost track of after a stint at Vint Hill Farms after the Nam.

"Ed Rose"..... [First it was an officer, now we got a Squid...} erose@telepath.com
[I told Ed that I couldnt remember any Naval personel in OPs, (Zoomies, Yes, Navy, No) to wit, he replied:]

Straight through the doors of the OPS bldg and all the way back on the right. Last bay were Navy/Marine only, Next to the last were ASA intercept operators and US. We also occupied the French barracks on the North end by the ball field. (When I was challenged on the outer perimeter I answered, "Squid of the Guard". Roger Blake was there at the same time and may remember.

Andy Vaden......  zenith@jerseycape.com

Greetings...... I had to take time and thank you for your work in putting the 8th RRFS page together. I was ASA from 67 through 71 and did my one VN tour at the 8th (11/69-1170). I went there from Vint Hill as a 33B and ended up a 95B (Cop) working the gate outside OPS.("Wheres you Badge?). .. Last spring I got involved with the USASA Alumni Association- National Capital Region. Met a lot of interesting ASAers (all a lot older than myself). I assume the B-52 Dispatch is your artwork.... nice work... it would look good on a black t-shirt.... I never got a good read on when you were there.[ June70-June71]..Was the Trai Bac Station Power & Light Co. (the 8ths 6 tube 81MM mortar team) still operating? In what little can be found about the 8th, they are never mentioned. Belonging to the mortar team got you off guard and other details. Anyone who caught guard in tower 3 by the pits will remember the T2 ringing and you scrambling out of the tower before the tubes opened up. It was not unheard of for a low angle round to riccochette off the tower.... Again, nice work & thanks for the memories!

"Eric Cook" ..... ??????.net I lost yer new mail address PLS REXMIT

The hadsome guy with "peace beads" is a much younger me. Do you remember what the majors name was that was our commander? I remember he had a hospital bed in his room and was porkin a donut dollie from the 8th.
BTW, I was O5h E-3 when I got there then made E-4 when I started to fly.

Do you remember the black dog in the Co. area? His name was "Dog" as I remember, the last I saw of him was on the flight line when we went to Da Nang when we pulled out.
I also remember Tiny from supply. But for the life of me names have gone on others.. if you can remember any it would be appreciated. I remember Greg Lovelady, and there was a guy from NC (who last I heard drove an 18 wheeler) named Chuck that I roomed with in Da Nang/Saigon/and then off post at the 7th when we got sent there. I thought of another guy but I cant remember his name he used to chew in the planes and had a canteen with XXX marked on the side as a spittoon.

Also I just remembered I flew with Mr Sikes at the 156th in El Paso later after Thailand...and I heard from him Mr Mann had become a corporate pilot or something.

"Ted T. Buchanan"..... buck@vcn.com

The 407th RR Det I was with was at Alpha 4, a lovely garden spot named Con Thien that was willed to us from the Marines when they decided to pack their toys and go home in 69. It was about 2 klicks on the south side of songben hai... thats ben hai crick for us cowboys. The 265th HQ was at Camp Eagle, but I dont remember any 407th yardbirds there.

"Gerald "Jerry" Mohn"..... gmohn@talon.net

Was just browsing the net and thought I would look up anything on the ASA, or if you still prefer the XYZ . Found your site on "old Phu Bai and the 8th. What a great job. It really brought back the memories. My name is Gerald "Jerry" Mohn and I was a 98c20, traffic analysis, from April 71 to Mar 72, and can remember many a night on the bunker line and staring at hill 180. I think my longest and loneliest Christmas eve night of my life was spent on that bunker line in 1971. Would like to hear from anyone that was at the 8th in 1971 or 1972., especially anyone that worked the Hanoi High command problem. I spent my first several weeks at Phu Bai in in the old French huts next to company B Headquarters, then moved to the trailers, like you my trailer had a very nice air conditioner in the wall, but it never worked. Just loved the rainy season, I think about it every time I pull a damp piece of wash out of the dryer...and thanks for the walk down memory lane!

John Rufo .....   J_Rufo@auxcom.aux.umass.edu

I was ther from Oct. 1969 - Oct. 1970. If you have any plans on expanding the page, I can probably dig up some more pictures.

John Hatcher..... jlhatcher@popc.ipa.net

I really enjoyed your 8th RRFS pages. I was there in 68 on TDY from the 265th RRC of the 101st. Spent most of the last half of my tour there. I was a Vietnamese linguist. Cant bust you for Then and Now though, cause I havent used the Vietnamese in ages. Looks as if things were much the same when you were there, though I expect the mold in the showers was deeper by then and the rats, you didnt mention the rats.
[ and the toilets hadnt been flushed in a year ]

Thanks,
John Hatcher

Tony Olivier .....   tolivier@primus.com.au

I was a 72B at the 8th in Phu Bai from January 1968 to Jan 69. The Tet offensive of 68 was certainly an interesting time (at the age of 18 !). If you come across anyone who was there in 68-69 please pass on my e-mail address to them - especially if they were 72Bs. [ "Us 72Bs are a rare breed, Tonys the only other one Ive met on-line." ]

CHECK THIS OUT GUYS!!! Tony sent me this picture of what used to be "A-ROW" (The B.O.Q.)...until Tet68.

"Scoop Oliver with all the news, 29 years later!!!"

"...A photo of the BOQ (the famous Row A) that got blew up by a rocket during the Tet offensive in Jan. 68. The photo is taken from the EM mess end of Row A. Therefore, the wall you see on the right hand side was the wall to the EM club where many a beer was consumed ! I like the distraught looking officer in the photo standing in what, I guess, used to be his room !"

"William M. Blake, Jr." (Mickey) William M. Blake, Jr. and
Jonas Marnick (YUNGBLUDD)yungbludd@ezaccess.net

My name is William M Blake Jr. My nick name is Mickey and Im from Guinea Virginia, near Fredericksburg. Everyone called me either Blake or Huey. I found out about this ASA page site from Yungblood (Bob Marnick). A friend of mine who was in VN with me. I was a 72B20D1. Orginally spent 2 years at Torri Station in Okinawa and had the fortune of being sent to PhuBai for my last tour, from Feb 11,71 to Feb10,72, where I ETSd.

It was really interesting seeing the picture and seeing picture of before and after.

My brain is a little dull after all these years, but, the picture of Russel Haynes... he looks awful familiar. I was a sgt there. He [Yungbludd] called me about the page to have me check it out. Some of the guys that I remember was a guy named Nunn from Texas. Tall, slender guy. Snoody, from, I believe Galveston TX. Little heavy set, but a really decent guy. There was Harvey Dize (Dizie), from Salisbury MD. There was a bunch of guys, but I have try and think of what there real names were and not just there nick names. I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy reading the information about you and your family. My wife and I have been married for 25 years. We had to boys. One is in his last year at West Point. And my youngest (17) died 2 months ago in a freak car accident. My family has been my life, so its nice to see you with a picture of your child and wife. It helped take my mind off things for a little while. I try and see if I can remember some of these other guys and get you some information. Take care and talk later. mickey e-mail address: wblake@crosslink.com

By the way: The thing I cant help but remember is the Giant Cockroaches and biggest Damned Rats, Ive every seen.

[ When I heard from these guys, I went looking though my collection of Viet Nam pictures and came up with a couple shots. These guys worked in the same CommCenter I did at the same time, but we were on (in?) different tricks. ]
Mickey is second from the left.

Somewhere I have a photo of the smoldering BOQ  (closest row of trailers to EM club)  rocketed during Tet 68. We thought for awhile the Club had been hit!! Diddybopper at PhuBai from 12/66 to 5/31/68.

At present; 911 Dispatcher (work with radios & keyboard, sound familiar?). Live in upstate NY. Was involved with effort to create our county Vietnam Memorial; check it out at; nethomes.com/newyorker/vietnam

Roger Simerly.....  ras@www.vscc.cc.tn.us

I like the jest of your page. Straight forward. Why dont I see this kind of personally written info more often. You know your page should be posted with Mark on AOL. I think your page would be a good link to view from this page. By the way, I am a RR man from 71-72(05h20).

Marvin B. Hearrell .....    owens1@mnsinc.com

My name is SP4 Hearrell, Marvin B. Jr. RA18862727 8th RRFS, 4/69-3/70. MOS- 05h, I slept in the first row of trailers. B row, A row was taken out by fire.... I hope we can talk in real time on the phone or something.. I have never gotten in touch with anyone from that terrible time....

Glenn M. Forrest .....   gmf@halcyon.com

I served with a Navy/Marine detachment, Detachment "Alpha" NavComSta Phil, at the 8th RRFS. We were located at the ?north? end of the Camp. Do you have any info on them or can you point me to a source? I was there 6/67 - 7/68. Can you tell me the name of the Camp where the 8th was located? I can remember Camp Evans but I think that was a larger Camp outside the gate and to the south. Did you ever get to the top of hill 180? Going up was no big deal, coming down was something else! [ Then, theres Vern—KEEPER OF THE ASA DATABASE—FINDER OF LOST SOULS—"DATA-MASTER" ]

NOTE: Verns Email address has changed...AGAIN...

Vern Greunke...vgreunke@bigfoot.com

Vern Greunke is currently building a database of all ASA vets for the purpose of reuniting old friends. At this point 5000 names have been accumulated, not all with addresses or phone numbers. Please send [to Vern] via snail mail or email any names or copies of old orders you have. Even just last names and the unit you remember them in. Orders have middle initials and RA and SSNs which help pinpoint enlistment areas and homestates. Contact Vern about getting a copy of the database as an attachment on email. We will have to work on the format for that.

J. D. Worrel.......jdworrel@ix.netcom.com Organization: Sons of Liberty (MACV Branch)

I was there from Oct 1969 to Jan 1970.

I extended in Phu Bai to get out of the army 5 MONTHS early! As much as I hated Phu Bai, I couldnt see going back to the world and getting puked on for 7-8 months at some stateside unit where all I did was play army. (they would let me have ammo there!)

Roger P. Blake...wrblake@ns.net

I was stationed there as a Vietnamese linguist from August 68 to August 69. From Phu Bai I went to the 7th RRFS at Udorn, and thence to Hakata, Japan. The first three months at Phu Bai I lived in a tent out on the old tennis courts, then I was able to move up to one of the trailers---- which one Im not sure. At age 52, a lot of my brain cells have also been lost. When I got there the B row was filled with tents. I had heard it got blown up, so the photo you had of it was pretty interesting. Some of the dthings I do remember include bribing the Korean contractor who repaired the reefers with a couple of bottles of booze to get the thing blowing cold air. And the people, parties, rockets, and the EM club, and the parties......We had a lot of parties. For some reason visiting your site has caused numerous memories to ooze up things like dining on what we called B-52 elephant steak at the messhall (boy was that bad food); pulling guard duty at the ammo dump while being rocketed and praying that nothing hit the pallets of 155 rounds that were stacked 10 feet away; as a newby getting ready to try out the algie polluted swimming pool but seeing a big as snake crawl out from it first. (That kept me out of the pool my whole tour). Yes, I remember well the crud growing in the showers - which by the way never had hot water the whole time I was there.

Bob Grossman...bobg@muhlon.com

330th ASA/RRC
313th RRB
17th ASA Field Station & Detachments

I shipped out to Vietnam in August of 66. I spent my first month on a slow boat to SE China [it counted for in country time]. The 330th ASA shipped out of Texas and became the 330th RRC in Pleiku. My first day in Vietnam was being issued 100 rounds of ammo for our M14 and loading onto a WW2 stile landing craft. We made our beach landing ready for anything. On the beach big blue Air Force buses picked us up and off to the air strip. About 100 of us sat on the floor of a C130 packed like sardines. In Pleiku they gave us a field to set up our pup tents. We spent the next month putting an antenna farm up and convoying our equipment accross country. I spent about 6 months with the 330th.

I landed in the 313th RR Battlion at Nha Trang. This outfit was Comcenter relay and Headquarters for RR units. I spent my last few months at First Field Force Headquarters. Two of us 72B took turns working incoming only ina plush hotel full of brass [only becasue I was low man]. Nha Trang was the the main Rest and Recoup for both sides right on the beach.

Next 2 years in Germany. Fall 67 I was sitting at airport hanger in Germany 2 month out Vietnam and getting ready to go a war in the Mideast.

Marc Shideler...mshidele@sprynet.com

Just came across your Phu Bai page and loved it. Guess I had it plush there compared to the early timers. I was the S-3, Jul 72 till we closed the station, then moved with some operators to DaNang and moved in with the CARRS and the Vietnamese. Finally got thrown out of country in Feb 73. Starting to hear from 05hs.... Lots of crazy fuckers..  [Surprise!!!]  just as I thought. One dude even got to do it again for the CIA in West Africa for awhile. Definitely a pattern.
