Me with "the Hog". Notice the open bomb-bay doors beneath the fuselage of
the P-2. This facilitated the loading of many cases of San Miguel beer for
transport from Cubi Point, NAS in the Phillipenes back to Cam Rahn Bay,
after a three-day "corrosion control" mission to Cubi Point. This
"importation" of alcoholic beverages into Cam Rahn caused a minor diplomatic
flap with our hosts and allies --- Vietnam, Republic of --- forcing us to
turn to supplying various 509th Group personnel with hard-to-obtain consumer
electronics from Cubi's PACEX outlet. Actually, those 509th personnel were
usually on the Cubi flights because they were run --- outside of the
Navy's bone fide requirement that corrosion control be performed at
specified intervals --- as an "off-the-books" R&R opportunity for boosting
509th morale.
