My name is Dan Shapiro. I was a 98C20 at the 8th from Nov 69-Nov 70. Dug into my old photo box, unfortunately the garage roof leaked one year, most of the photo's were ruined. | |
Found this on a Marine web site. It was mislabled as being the ARVN training camp just north of PhuBai airport. Photo was supposed to have been taken in 1965. |
View looking down towards the Mess Hall (Anyone remember Thanksgiving 1970 when we got the bad turkey and a lot of guys got sick?). Jack Morrisette on the ground with Steve Gaston sitting on his knee. Me in the one lawn chair we had. This was taken on a Sunday morning. We didn't have to work that day, so we polished of a case of Pabst Blue Ribbon. Jack was with the linguist secton. Last I heard from him in the mid-70's was that he went Regular Army all the way......when I last spoke to him SP5 Morrisette was CAPT Morrisette stationed at Ft. Sam Huston, Texas. |
The Ground Reserve Force! This first is a photo of the General Reserve Force taken Aug 1970. I am in the second row on the extreme right. After all these years I have no idea who else is in the photo. Remember the GRF....the guys who played soldier once a month to get out of guard duty on the perimeter? |
This photo was taken around April or May 1970. My bunk in SEAhut #4. Looking back, you fried in these huts during the summer and froze during the monsoon season. |
These are the SEAhuts that were built in late 69 early 70 to take the place of A Row. View is looking towards the motorpool area. This was taken around Aug-Sept 70. |
This is a photo of our house mouse Chi Da, or simply Da. On the left is Steve Gaston another 98C20, with me on the right. Don't recall when in '70 this was taken. Steve worked ARDF. Last I hear from him in the late 70's was that he was a Vice President in a bank somewhere in San Diego, CA. If you look behind us in the photo you can see shrapnel scars in the blast wall. We always thought that this is real close to where the 120mm rocket landed that took out the A Row of trailers. Made us feel safe, figuring the VC/NVA could never drop a rocket in the same place again. | BACK |
