CHRIS KREYMANN WRITES: I was with the 101st Airborne right next door to the 8th RR from 9/71 to
9/72. When I got in country, my division had 24,000 troops. When I
left, i was one of the last 12 to go. There were about 12 of us that
pulled security detail for the 8th during that time when everybody stood
down, went back to the states, and let charlie have it all back.
Anyway, I spent about a day looking for my old pics and trying to figure out where my hootch was in relationship to your aerial pics. I think there must have been more than one of those old french bunkers, and i think i was right next to the most southerly one (?). I seem to be overly preoccupied with this all of a sudden. Pic1 shows the bunker right outside my hootch. I think this must have been the most southerly extent of the 8th along Hwy 1, but I'm not really sure. |

Pic2 shows my hootch on the left, the guard tower for the 8th in mid-distance, and the same bunker on the right. |

Pic3 shows a view north across the minefield around the 8th, showing a two-story building that's still there in one of the recent pics from the guy [[ Ray Macek ]] that took the pilgrimage.. |

Pic5 is a view across the minefield towards your unit. At least
I think that's how it all fits. If you have any different ideas of how these actually relate to the location of the 8th, I'd sure appreciate a word back. That EMail address again: kreyman@ix.netcom.com Have a few more pictures if you're interested.

...there's one more defender of Phu Bai's 8th RRFS that should get credit for his tireless efforts. Pic6 was my dog, Stanley, that worked for me checking the perimeter where he would bark tirelessly at any Vietnamese he encountered. You can see him here on his appointed rounds. Unfortunately, one day he got into the minefield and went to doggy heaven...but even then he finally settled the standing question of whether the minefield was actually real or just a placebo. |
